... many different types of polyethylene, from low density LDPE to high density HDPE. Various 'grades' of HDPE can also be produced by ...

HDPE Granules (Virgin HDPE)

Virgin HDPE granules are the premium source of HDPE for all HDPE applications. A product of crude oil, virgin HDPE is suitable for use in food packaging, toys, furniture, pipes, and many more applications. Virgin HDPE typically comes in the form of virgin HDPE granules, which must be melted by the end user to obtain liquid HDPE which can then be used in blow molding, injection molding, and the production of film or pipes. Virgin HDPE granules are advantageous in many respects. Their small size results in a quicker melt time, and also a more homogeneous HDPE mix, and transport is also made more simple by the free flowing nature of HDPE granules.

Production Of Virgin HDPE Granules

Virgin HDPE is made by ‘cracking’ naphtha. When naphtha is heated to high temperatures its molecular structure breaks down and it releases ethylene gas. Ethylene is the sole ingredient of HDPE, HDPE being an acronym standing for High Density Polyethylene. Of course, in gaseous form ethylene is of little use, so it must be transformed into polyethylene via one of several reactions.

When ethylene is exposed to high temperatures and pressures, it naturally forms long chains and becomes polyethylene. It is not commercially viable for ethylene to be heated to the great temperatures and pressures needed for this reaction to take place naturally however, so commercial production of HDPE involves catalytic reactions in which a catalyst is added to the ethylene gas to enable polymerization to take place at lower temperatures. Different processes use different catalysts, but all produce high quality HDPE. There is no great difference in the type of HDPE produced during the different types of catalytic reaction, as a catalyst is by definition a substance which is not expressed or included in the product of a reaction.

The Philips catalyst slurry process and the Ziegler catalyst solution process are two of the most commonly used processes in the manufacturing of HDPE today. It should be noted that these processes are capable of producing many different types of polyethylene, from low density LDPE to high density HDPE. Various ‘grades’ of HDPE can also be produced by controlling various elements of the reaction.

The result of the polymerization of ethylene is a translucent viscous liquid which quickly cools and hardens to form a solid. Before the newly produced virgin HDPE solidifies, manufacturers pipe the liquid virgin HDPE through a die and cut it into small sections, which cool to form small solid virgin HDPE granules.

HDPE Granules Supplier

We source virgin (and reporcessed) HDPE granules of all grades. Please contact us through the below form and let us know your detailed requirements. We will get back to you with current HDPE availability and price quotation

HDPE:
High Density Poly Ethylene is a form of recyclable plastic commonly used in consumer product manufacturing. The definition of High Density is anything between 0.941 – 0.965 gram/cc Polyethylene. LDPE has higher temperature resistance, higher stiffness. HDPE provides a good water barrier but it does not hold oxygen or CO2 well.

HDPE Use:
In HDPE Film form it is used for snack food packaging and cereal box liners. In blow molded HDPE form it is used for non carbonated drink bottles. In injection molded form, it is mostly used for margarine tubs, deli food and whipped toppings. High Density Polyethylene is also used as detergent bottles, milk jugs, garbage containers, water pipes (plumbing) as well as packaging for industrial chemicals such as detergents, bleach and acids.

General uses of HDPE include bread trays, films for grocery sacks, bottles for beverages and household chemicals and injection-molded beverage cases.

Scrap HDPE:
In essence Scrap HDPE is recyclable waste consisting of only High Density Polyethylene. It comes all sorts of shapes, forms and colors. The better it is sorted and cleaned, the more it is worth on the recycle market. Some popular forms of HDPE Scrap are:

postconsumer HDPE Scrap (A finished HDPE material that would normally be discarded as a solid waste after having completed its life cycle as a consumer item)

HDPE film trimmings (scrap from carrier)

HDPE bags (carrier bags made of HDPE. They come in colors: natural, white, mixed, printed and unprinted)

HDPE Regrind (HDPE carrying bags and similar, converted into hard solid structure then grinded and made ready for recycling)

Scrap HDPE bottles

HDPE barrels and drums (also named HDPE canes, HDPE tanks. Those are empty “barrels” made of HDPE. They can be squashed and mounted on palletes or in original form – which is unpractical.)

HDPE mixed postconsumer scrap (includes everything and anything made of High Density Polyethylene. HDPE mixed post consumer scrap can be sorted by color)

HDPE Scrap forms:
High Density PolyEthylene Scrap comes in various forms. It can be baled, loose, compacted into secure bundles (cubicles), rolls, grinded into flakes, etc.

Polymers or more popular name Plastics are substances containing a large number of structural units joined by the same type of linkage. Polymers in the natural world have been around since the beginning of time. These substances often form into a chain-like structure. Starch, cellulose, and rubber all possess polymeric properties. Artifical polymers have been studied since 1832. Today, the polymer industry has grown to be larger than the aluminum, copper and steel industries combined. Plastics which are most widely used today are:

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): a rugged material which is easily moulded, has a high resistance to impact and is not affected by most chemicals. Mainly used in blow and injection moulding it may also be vacuum formed or extruded.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): a very common plastic and one of the earliest types developed. PVC’s often contain chemicals called plasticisers which can leach from the plastic over time. You will find it in roofing gutters, electrical insulation and fittings and waste pipes. For food use a special grade has been developed called uPVC and is “unplasticised”. Be careful in selecting a PVC product for food contact. The qualities of PVC vary and they can be flexible or rigid. It is commonly injection moulded, extruded, blow moulded and vacuum formed. PVC is subject to attack by solvents.

Polypropylene (PP): Although mainly used in injection moulding, it may be blow or rotationally moulded, vacuum formed or extruded. PP is an easy to mould material which has medium impact resistance, high structural strength and is resistant to a wide range of chemicals.

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET): a form of polyester and its most visible use is in fizzy drink bottles and honey jars. Soft drink bottles can be recycled into clothing fibre. It has very high impact resistance and modest structural strength. It is resistant to many solvents and is particularly suitable for food contact. You can freeze it but not boil or microwave. It is commonly injection and blow moulded.

Polypropylene Co-Polymer (PPCO): Because it is a Polypropylene molecule with about 2% HDPE added it has a mixture of the properties of HDPE and Polypropylene including very high impact resistance and moderate structural strength. Primarily used in injection moulding. It is resistant to a wide range of chemicals.

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE or LLDPE): It is rotationally, blow and injection moulded though it may be vacuum formed or extruded. LDPE has very high impact resistance, modest structural strength and good resistance to a huge range of chemicals.

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS): It has a shiny impervious surface, good impact resistance and very good structural strength. It is commonly vacuum formed or extruded.

Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN): It has medium impact resistance, very good structural strength and has a shiny impervious surface. It is mostly injection moulded however it is not the best at high or low temperatures.

Nylon: It generally has excellent structural and impact strength, great working temperature range and is resistant to petrol, oils and solvents. It comes in many and varied forms. It is commonly injection moulded and extruded. It is subject to attack by acids.

High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS): Medium impact resistance and excellent structural strength. It is commonly injection moulded.
Not very good at high or low temperatures.

Polycarbonate (PC): It has an incredibly high resistance to impact. For this reason it is a major component in bullet-proof “glass” and commonly used for beer jugs and conservatories. Subject to attack from solvents. It is commonly injection moulded, extruded, and blow moulded. It has ability to handle high temperatures for that reason it is used in microwave cookware.

Nitrile Rubber (Nitrile): It is synthetic, as opposed to natural latex. Although it is not considered to be a “plastic” it can be injection moulded. Car tyres are made of Nitrile.

Styrene: a generic name given to a range of polymers. It is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H5CH=CH2. Excellent stuctural strength and clarity offset poor impact resistance and susceptibility to attack from solvents. It is commonly injection moulded.
